WHO WE ARE

David Watanabe - Founder

David has 20 years experience in financial institutions and investment management specifically, both as an advisor and in an operating capacity having helped build and then run the investment management banking practices at two investment banks and as a member of Russell Investments.

David has helped both public and private firms achieve their strategic objectives, advising on a wide array of transactions for a wide array of clients, from a $300 million private wealth manager to one of the largest international banking organizations.  This breadth of experience having worked at boutique and bulge bracket banks, provides David a unique insight to client needs and the full range of options and outcomes.

Prior to founding BroadSpring Advisors, David worked in technology at both Microsoft and Amazon as a senior manager overseeing teams and projects in finance and retail marketplaces.

Before pivoting to technology, David was a senior member of the Investment Management and Research team at Russell Investments executing product launches, directing client service initiatives and strategic project reviews.  He also conducted manager research interviews as part of Russell's manager evaluation process.

Prior to that, he was a member of the Financial Institutions Group at Credit Suisse (formerly CSFB), working with insurers, banks and other financial institutions advising on capital raises and mergers and acquisitions.  He was head of the Investment Management investment banking practice within FIG and built the franchise to a Top 3 ranking among M&A advisors.  He also advised Credit Suisse itself on numerous transactions when it was making investments to build its own asset management capabilities.

He has also served as head of Corporate Development at Citigroup Japan in Tokyo for three years, advising the heads of retail banking, consumer finance, credit cards and investment management on strategy and potential transactions.  He gained extensive insight into the Japanese financial services sector evaluating and proposing potential transactions and executing dispositions in addition to building a strong network of financial institution contacts.

Preceding his time in Tokyo, he helped build the Investment Management banking practice at Citigroup Global Markets (formerly Salomon Smith Barney) to the top ranking among M&A advisors.  Prior to this, David was a member of Berkshire Global Advisors.  Most recently, he has been a private investor through BroadSpring Capital.
